Debunking Myths and Showcasing Advantages: The Case for EV Shunters in Canada

As the global push toward sustainability intensifies, Canada finds itself at the crossroads of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. Despite the compelling benefits of EV shunters, adoption rates in Canada are slower than expected.

Much of this hesitation stems from outdated perceptions regarding electric vehicle reliability, especially in challenging climates. Given the higher capital outlay, there is concern about the ROI compared to diesel units. However, the narrative is shifting with real-world operating data and support from government grants. Ultimately, the real-world performance of EV shunters is debunking many of these outdated perceptions.

Breaking Down the Myths: EV Shunters in Winter

One of the most common misperceptions about all electric vehicles is their performance, or lack thereof, in cold weather. Critics often claim battery efficiency drops drastically during Canadian winters, rendering EVs unreliable. While colder temperatures can affect battery performance, advancements in EV technology and battery chemistry have minimized this impact.

Second- and third-generation EV shunters offer high uptime (better than diesel based on our data) and greater reliability, even in extreme working and climate conditions. For example, manufacturers are now producing batteries and charging infrastructure designed to withstand both sub-zero temperatures and searing heat, ensuring consistent performance year-round (even in 24/7 operations).

A common infrastructure myth is that EV chargers in Canada fail during freezing rain or harsh winter conditions. While some non-Tesla charging stations have faced reliability issues, new infrastructure investments and technology advancements address these challenges. Companies are building resilient charging networks designed to thrive in harsh Canadian weather.

Cost Efficiency: EV Shunters Outperforming Expectations

• Electric vehicle shunters significantly outperform traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) shunters in total operating costs. Electricity rates in Canada are relatively affordable – around $0.15 per kWh in some provinces – making EV shunter charging costs much lower than diesel fuel expenses.

• Diesel costs in Canada continue to be high, and running a diesel shunt unit can cost as much as $7.00 to $8.00 CAD per hour.

• Lazer’s extensive owned and operated EV Shunt fleet provides phenomenal savings to our clients.

Education and Awareness: The Key to Driving Adoption

One barrier to electric vehicle shunter adoption in Canada is more education. Potential buyers and fleet operators often rely on anecdotal evidence from years ago, unaware of the strides made in EV shunter technology and battery chemistry. For instance, misconceptions about EV shunters’ range persist despite advances delivering a proven range that exceeds even the harshest of expectations. Educating the public about real-world performance metrics – uptime, cost savings, and environmental benefits – can increase adoption.

A Sustainable Future for Canada

The Canadian electric vehicle shunter landscape is evolving rapidly. Manufacturers and infrastructure providers are addressing past challenges, making EV shunters viable and superior for various use cases. By continuing to invest in technology, dispelling myths, and focusing on education, Canada is well-positioned to embrace a greener, more cost-effective transportation future.

As the conversation around EV shunters in Canada grows, it’s clear that they’re not just a sustainable choice but also a smart one. Whether through lower operating costs, improved infrastructure, or reliable winter performance, EV shunters are proving to be a transformative force in the Canadian transportation landscape.
